Good one
I am thrilled to see the response to this new series LEGENDS. The first volume within three weeks has crossed landmark 1200 views. Considering that this is about a famous Carnatic musician, and that too with no trace of his film contributions,I feel truly humbled. This is like an art movie beating big budget multi-starrer in box office! Whoever saying that music has limited viewership in Sulekha please let them do their own introspection? I thank my friends, family and everyone from the bottom of my heart for your patronage to good music.
In this (Vol2) I will focus on film contributions of Dr Balamurali Krishna. Whenever music directors have a situation in the movie which calls for pure classical song, Balamuralikrishna was called by all the leading South Indian music directors. Quantitywise his film songs are less than 25, but each of these film songs have become immortal over the times . It started with Thiruvilayadal. KV Mahadevan is the maestro in Carnatic music. This song in Tiruvilaiyadal is part of the Leela’s of Lord Shiva. The king entertains the musician who has pride and ego and at the end the musician demands the whole kingdom for his talent. How the Lord Shiva himself comes disguised as street singer and make the musician leave the kingdom is the part of the story. Although this is a Ragamalika the base raag is Maund . This song Oru Naal Poduma after 50 years is the absolute beauty and only a Music Director like KV Mahadevan could do full justice to the range of Dr Balamurali Krishna and this I would rate the best of the best of Dr Balamurali Krishna.
Maund is also the favourite raag of AR Rahman too (Anjali Anjali and others).

2) Music Directors Visvanathan Ramamurthy and ace director CV Sridhar were working on music for a art movie called Kalaikoyil combination. This movie was based on the life of a Veena player. Sridhar wanted VR to produce a classical duet in line with the theme of the movie with Veena background and the genius composer duo could think only of Dr Balamurali Krishna as the song is pure classical in raag Abhogi. The song is still fresh after so many decades although the movie did not click in the box office .P Suseela has matched Balamurali in melody and this is an immortal classic for ever .

3) Apoorva Raagangal – K Balachander was discussing with MS Visvanathan about this song situation which is a turning point of the movie. MSV composed in various raga for 15 Days and KB was not satisfied. He argued with MSV that he has kept the movie name as Apoorva Raganga .(Rare Ragas). How MSV can compose in the same known ragas ? MSV was then recording for a Telugu AIR program then. Balamurali also was there to sing for that program. MSV discussed Balachander’s requirement of a rare raga for this new movie . Then Balamurali told about his own creation a rare raga called Mahathi with just 4 notes and sang a few alaap on the raag. A fully charged MSV came back and worked on the raag. Here was Kannnadasan writing the lyrics spontaneously… Athisaya ragam Ananda ragam Azhagiya Ragam Apoorva Ragam. The song was immediately approved by K Balachander . KB asked MSV to add Bhairavi note in the end to fit the situation as Kamal a Mridangam player declares his love for the older Sri Vidya, a movie ahead of his times .This song of KJ Yesudas was a sensational hit. The song required both MSV and Jesudass for that special touch, to loop back to ragas Mahati and Bhairavi. Kamalahasan was a music student of Dr Balamurali Krishna for a few years!

5) Chinna Kannan Azhaikkiran …Rithi gowlai raag
When Ilayaraja started with a bang with the Tamil film Annakili in 70s the media tried to downplay him initially that he is good only for folk village music. Kavikuyil is amongst the first ten movies for which he composed. He brought in Dr Balamurali Krishna to render this flute based classical song in Ritigowlai raag, Balamurali said in an interview that Ilayaraja has captured the full dimension of the raag Riti gowla in this song .It was composed on one of the toughest swara, and done with such melodious touch. Balamurali said he has never seen a person even with so much expertise in carnatic would have dared to try or even thought of it.
In the movie starring Sivakumar and Sridevi the song will be the theme song.CLICK ON YOUTUBE LINK BELOW
Put off by the chaotic growth of sabhas and cutcheris, the veteran vocalist is optimistic though that it is a passing cloud.
“Anything too much is not good. Sadly, artists think more the concerts, more the popularity. There’s no point doing 20 ordinary concerts. They owe it to the art to improve the standard of listening.”
Balamurali Krishna is not afraid of telling his mind in conservative music circle and in one of the interviews has said that mainly, he likes to relax in a casino,or by watching dishum-dishum movies…. I don’t want to know who is fighting. I don’t want to know the name of the movie. I just enjoy the action…..

Music is not as simple as learning and performing. Values and ethics enhance its aesthetic quality, stresses Balamuralikrishna. “For instance, when I was awarded Sangita Kalanidhi and presided over the Music Academy conference, that year I did not perform in any other sabha. We need to honour the prestigious title. Also, once you start making compromises for seeking kutcheris, you will be caught in a rut. Rasikas should have the urge to see and hear you

Unlike many of the veterans, he is open to creative experiments, particularly fusion. “I have performed with British musicians. I have sung Rabindra Sangeet and French numbers too. Most often I include local flavour in my concerts to connect with people.”
